Linlithgow Palace was one of the principal residences of the monarchs of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries. Mary, Queen of Scots, was born here in 1542. Although maintained after Scotland's monarchs left for England in 1603, the palace was little used, and was accidently burned out in 1746. It is now a visitor attraction in the care of Historic Scotland.

 

The castle is reputedly haunted by a number of ghosts. Naturally, one of those is Mary, Queen of Scots, who seems to be one of the most well-travelled spectres ever. Her spectre has been reported in the area of the chapel. Another apparition is that of a Woman in White who brings about a drop in temperature before she appears.
